5 New Pickleball Rules for 2025 – What You Should Know

The coming year will bring fresh rule changes to pickleball that are designed to make the game even fairer and more exciting. Here is a quick overview of the most important changes you need to know before your next match:

  1. responsibility for the partner
From 2025, you must make correct calls not only for yourself but also for your playing partner when you clearly see that the ball went out of bounds. This rule (13.D.1.a) aims to increase the accuracy of line decisions.

  2. No comments from viewers
In future, spectators will not be allowed to give advice or instructions on game decisions (Rule 6.C.4). This is intended to prevent unwanted influences and ensure fair play.

  3. signaling of unpreparedness
Under the new rule (4.C.2) it is now allowed to shout "not ready" if you cannot receive the serve. In addition to the classic hand signal, this verbal announcement is now permitted.

  4. Free ball release during serve
Until now, you had to release the ball with your free hand. From 2025, the ball can be released directly from the pickleball paddle - but without generating spin (Rule 4.A.5). This opens up new tactical options when serving.

  5. Introduction of rally scoring in doubles
Provisional rules (4.G.1 and 12.B.1) allow rally scoring in doubles, where every rally counts, but traditional scoring remains in force in most competitions.

The new rule changes are designed to help ensure that pickleball continues to be a fair, dynamic and fun game. For more details, visit the official USA Pickleball website.
